This is such an inspiring essay. While my goals at the moment aren't as big as having an actual book published - I'd love to connect to an audience on Substack first - I often have to push through the phases where I catch myself wondering: why write at all if no one reads me anyway? Then I remember: oh, that's right, I cannot NOT write. It's part of who I am. Even if no one ever reads what I write, I will still keep writing. I wouldn't be myself if I didn't.
So yes, I couldn't agree more. Who would we be without it, really?
This resonated with me. I'm retired and have the opportunity to write full time. Up to now, I've self published four novels. They bring in a trickle of money and I have a very loyal but small fan-base. I've looked into trad publishing and had a few manuscript requests but to be honest I'm not really interested in them. It seems to me all they're interested in is celebrity memoirs and I've heard stories of non celebs being given a publishing contract and still having do plug their own books with regard to marketing. There's no way I'm giving a % to a literary agent, an editor, cover designer etc and earning a pittance myself just so I can say I'm trad published. Luckily for me, it's not about the money but about saying what I have to say, which, as you can see is a lot!
Congratulations on publishing four novels!! That is huge. I’m so happy the post resonated with you. And your insights/experience with publishing are very helpful, thank you for sharing. We all have our own path to walk 🙌
Thank YOU for sharing the story of sharing your comics with your art group, Laurel!!! It shows perfectly how everyone needs to define success for themselves, and what it can feel like when other people try to impose their ideas of success on you 🙌
Writing personally hit me at such as important time in my life and same with beginning to write in public. Loved this Sheridan. Write 4 life 👊🏻
That is so cool to hear, Kyle! Thanks for sharing. Write 4 life 🙌

Exactly—“Oh, that’s right, I cannot NOT write.” 🙌🙌
